How advertiser support can unlock new sources of income for nonprofits.

In today’s economy, nonprofits should use advertiser support as a charitable source of funding. If not, are nonprofits denying aid to families because they could have raised thousands of dollars through advertiser support? The answer may be yes!

Most nonprofit organizations are struggling in today’s economy to find sources of new funding. As a result, some nonprofits have turned to innovative “advertiser support” for additional revenue. This type of revenue is NOT peanuts or pennies; we’re talking about 15,000 – 20,000 dollars each year for nothing more than a some blue words on a website. Imagine, advertiser support could make the difference in whether or not an employee keeps their job…
A new staff member could be hired…
Hundreds of children could receive new school books…
An entire food locker or rental assistance program could be opened…
Shoes, toys and clothes for disadvantaged children…

The problem is that nonprofits need to start thinking outside of the box. Supplemental income derived from advertiser support is deposited directly into the organizations tax exempt bank account just like a donation. That means advertiser support or “unrelated business income” has nothing to do with an organizations tax exempt status. Call the IRS’ Tax Exempt help line at: 1-877-829-5500 and you will find out that “legal issues” are no excuse.
Think of advertiser support as free money, no fundraising needed, no paperwork to fill out and no paid employees needed for processing the ads. Just simply place an HTML code on your website and the rest takes care of itself. Depending upon the size of the organizations website and reputation of the organization, the advertisement will bring in 1,000 – 2,000 dollars each month. Just image what the County and State websites could make from advertiser support! School districts could bring in enough money to hire a new teacher!
Advertiser support is a charitable income the same as a new grantee, but without the “conditions” “expectations” or “deadlines”. Start using advertiser support to bring a new thousand dollars each month for use in fulfilling your organizations mission..
I am 100% sure that the children your organization serves will greatly appreciate it. Especially at Christmas time!
If your nonprofit wants to have a Q & A session with me for details on how to make this happen for you, then please email me or call me. Of course there is no fee .

Sacramento Community Family Resources

Online Information and Referrals connecting people in the community to the services they need.
How to use:
Bookmark the homepage. This provides you or your agency with an updated online database accessible from your desktop.
1. Click the bookmark
2. Click the topic of resource you need.
3. Click Print or Email referral.
In three clicks or less you have exactly the resources you need.
Why online information and referrals?
1. On-line database is updated.
2. Database includes all free to sliding scale services, not just tax exempt organizations.
3. Users have 24/7 access to the on-line database.
4. We search for resources to publish; therefore, we do not wait for resources to submit a request.
5. You or your agency does not need to call anyone for information because we provide the database up front and online to everyone.
6. You or your agency will never need to purchase a service directory or resource book again. We provide everything in print(e-text), including a free downloadable Community Service Program Directory.

The concept of our online Information and Referral service is only 5 years old in Sacramento, and still considered innovative with the use of technology. This non-traditional method of I & R has become an “extremely effective” and popular way of helping human service workers and the populations they serve. Currently, in Sacramento there are 25,000 to 30,000 page views of the database each month connecting people to the information and help that they need. Each month the growth rate of page views is over 90%(per Alexa.com +120% 3 Months). The bottom line is that there is no other information and referral service in Sacramento that exceeds this growth rate.
Your feedback is what makes this program work, so here is what you do.
1. Leave a comment as to how you would want us to help you or your agency.
2. Contact me, Victor Stark,CSW for a brief, and of course free, training presentation to you or your organization.
3. Most importantly, bookmark Onefatherslove.com on your computer and use with every person who needs help.

Individuals vs. Non-profits.

For the past few years I have heard both community-based and faith-based organizations claim that they are scammed by individuals and families for money and resources. As we all know that when we point our finger at someone that three fingers point back! Over the course of creating SCFR, I have contacted just about every community and faith based organization within the north Sacramento area and guess what I found? There are several non-profits claiming to help others that are actually just using the disadvantaged population for a reason to gain donations and funding.
First, a quick unofficial definition;

  • An individual seeking money or resources from an organization under false pretenses is “scamming.”
  • An organization seeking money or resources from individuals under false pretenses is “exploiting.”

Most of us know that community-based organizations provide services according to their grant guidelines, meaning that the purse strings of an organization are what really runs it rather than the needs of the people who need help. All of us now that what is written on paper is often times very different than a real life situation of someone in crisis.
In faith-based groups such as churches, the congregations donate money each Sunday at service and many church members give a tithe (10%) of their income. This money is given without any grantee guidelines to dictate how the money is spent.
Now let’s look at the overall situation in our community. I am sure that no one would argue that there are many, many more faith-based groups than community-based organizations within Sacramento County. That means there are millions of dollars each month donated to faith-based churches and organizations. So, where does all of the money go that these faith-based groups are receiving each Sunday morning? I do not see a food locker, homeless shelter or any faith-based social services going on at every church. I concede that there are a few “exceptions” such as St Vincent De Paul, Volunteers of America, and a few local neighborhood churches, but it is a very short list of exceptions.
The next time you feel that a non-profit church or organization is receiving money that should be spent on helping disadvantaged and oppressed people in our community and instead using their donation money in a “self-absorbed” manner, then ask them for their Form 1023 and Form 1024 included with their annual tax return. Anyone in the general public has a right to ask for and receive these documents from a non-profit showing how much money they received and what they did with it. It is the Federal law that non-profits provide this information immediately in person.
The only way that you can help yourself is to speak up and exercise your right to information. It is your duty and responsibility to help yourself.

Top 5 Reasons Why Clients Fail

Here are the five most common reasons why clients fail at reaching self-sufficiency. I am sure that you can think of more reasons, and I welcome and encourage you to post a comment stating other reasons. If at all possible, please include a practical solution to overcoming these obstacles.
Reason number 5;
Do to chronic adversity the client lacks, dignity, hope and the passion to succeed.
Reason number 4;
The client cannot meet the scheduling and appointments of the process. In other words, the client cannot jump through the hoops.
Reason number 3;
The resource that a client needs is “out of funds”.
Reason number 2;
The case worker is restricted by their organization’s policies and therefore, unable to effectively help their clients.
And the number 1 reason why clients fail is;
The clients “worker” is too busy, to many people on their caseload, not enough time, etc., etc., etc.,

By all means please post your comments and suggestions to this post. You can even do so anonymously.

The List of client resources

Here we will provide “The List” of Sacramento community resource organizations that provide effective help. This will also be an opportunity where non-profits can find a valuable resource program to include in their client services as well as network with.
The criteria for getting on the list are as follows:
1. Only resources that are provided for free can qualify. No income-based or sliding scale.
2. The resource must be available to organizations, not only individuals. For example, Sacramento Community Family Resources, 211, First 5 Sacramento, Soil Born Farms, etc.
3. You must include Sacramento Community Family Resources within your services to show that you are willing to provide free help that is available to your clients.
4. Only resources that have been reviewed in person are included.
If you want to have your organization include then please contact me for an appointment. If it is found that your organization offers a resource that effectively helps people in or community reach self sufficiency, we will include your resource as an example within our trainings, press releases, and grantee contacts.
